Solus OS: The distro LMDE wasn’t?

I’m looking into a Linux distribution called Solus OS and created by Ikey Doherty who gained a bit of name recognition for doing the Linux Mint Debian Edition.

Free culture, yes or no?

I love free culture.  Free is an ambiguous word in English in a way that it isn’t ambiguous in many other languages.  Our word “free” encompasses the meanings of freedom, rights, and a price tag of $0.00.  Some people in the free culture movement like to distinguish these two meanings, but I see no problem in conflating them. What is a window manager?

This post describes the form and function of window managers used in personal computing.  I will distinguish the window manager from other aspects of the graphical user interface and attempt to illustrate the variety that exists.

In short a window manager organizes and displays the application windows that are open on a computer. Read the rest of this entry »

What is a Linux Distribution?

TLDR: a Linux distribution is a collection of software including the Linux kernel that is provided to users via the Internet.

In this post I’m going to explain what the phrase “Linux Distribution” means.  I’m assuming a basic level of competence with technology, but not necessarily anything in depth.  I will make prolific use of links to Wikipedia and other websites where appropriate.  I am not attempting to advocate anything, just explain, but I have some personal bias as a Linux user. 2125

In the year 2125 I will be 139 years old but I will appear to be in my late sixties or early seventies because of advancements in medicine, especially facing the negative impact of aging.  I will have had several successful tumor removals and been treated for heart-disease.  I will have had several joint replacements and a few outdated prostheses to solve my degenerating vision and hearing, but overall I’ll be looking forward to my 140th birthday. Linux Desktops (2012 1st Quarter Comparison)

A lot has changed since my last post about Linux desktops only a few months ago.  Mostly in response to the big uproar in the community over Gnome3 and Unity. Read the rest of this entry »

2100

Continued from my last post, 2075, I thought I might follow through with another installment of my vision of the future.

In the year 2100, I will be 113 years old, though I will look about 60 because of medical solutions to many problems faced with aging discovered decades before. Read the rest of this entry »

2075

From hover cars to houses on Mars our ideas of the future have in part shaped how we developed it.  Science Fiction authors and futurists must be credited alongside scientists and brilliant minds that tested those waters and brought ideas to fruition. Read the rest of this entry »
